A professional currency trader with over eleven years of experience, I trade using a purely technical approach and employ algorithmic trading systems with a focus on statistical arbitrage models. I have previously worked as a managing partner of a foreign exchange brokerage, a fund manager, various financial technology start-ups and most recently as one of the founders of Stratura Investment Group.
As many have commented on the fact that I do what I without having a background in mathematics, it doesn’t mean that I’m not good at it. In 1999 after leaving the US Marine Corps, I enrolled in college at the University of Austin to start a law career. My undergrad major was philosophy as many attorneys that I respected and had contacted suggested that I pursue. Philosophy teaches a lot of analytical thinking that is beneficial to a trial attorney.
During my senior year of undergrad I discovered trading. Having a voracious appetite for knowledge, when the subject interests me, I quickly immersed myself in every piece of trading literature, article and trading system that I could find. I took numerous trading courses and had minor successes trading while still in college. When the time came to take my LSAT’s, I decided that instead of law I would pursue a career in trading.
It was actually the introduction of Metatrader 3, which got the retail Forex crowd in a buzz about automated trading that I took a strong interest in automating my strategies. From Metatrader it expanded in to TradeStation, then various platforms that required me to learn C# and C++ and eventually other more robust systems modeled in MatLab and R.
So how does someone who doesn’t have a formal mathematical or programming background develop winning trading algorithms? 11 years of experience in every aspect of the industry that I thought could expand my experience and knowledge, a strong entrepreneurial drive, countless hours spent learning and even more time behind the screen.
